WATTIE CREEK (LAWI) Framed Behind Glass
WATTIE CREEK (LAWI) Framed Behind Glass
The centre design is of the water system of Wattie Creek, at Daguragu and surrounding areas.
Water is one of the most important resources in country. There are great ceremonies (dance) for water. The place of this water is also very important; when Aboriginal stockmen and families walked off Wave Hill Station for better conditions and a bitter struggle for land Wattie Creek was the place where they sat down. There, they waited eight years for a government decision; eventually winning back a parcel of land called Daguragu. It is an important sacred site for the Conkerberry (Mapurra) Dreaming story.
The water system is also the place where mothers gather to cleanse babies (KARU) because of the healing powers of the water.
